Surgical repair of a valve is a procedure to treat heart valve diseases. A heart valve disease is
characterized when there is at least one of the four heart valves is not working properly. The heart
valve manages the flow of blood in the correct direction through your heart.
The four valves in the heart are mitral valve, tricuspid valve, pulmonary valve, and aortic valve. Each of the valves has flaps which are known as leaflets for the mitral and tricuspid valves and these are called cusps for the aortic and pulmonary valves. These flaps open and close with each of the heartbeat. When the valves don’t function properly (open and close), it disrupts blood flow through your heart to your body.
The surgeon repairs or replaces your affected heart valves. There are multiple types of surgical
approaches that can be used to repair or replace heart valves, which include open-heart surgery or
minimally invasive surgery for the heart. These treatments are based on multiple conditions such as
your age, your health, affected heart valve’s condition and the severity of it.
